Wtf random shutdowns

so here's the thing. I usually provide advice....now i need some.

My gaming PC will just shutdown while playing. I mean like immediate shutdown....like the power cord got pulled out. I'll be playing merrily along then.....OFF.

I do not know why. So far.....all components test fine. My AMD 64X2 5000+ is fine...my core temps are fine. My ASUS M2N32-SLI-Deluxe MOBO is fine, the PSU and memory is fine and my (2)Nvidia 8800's are fine. And yes...all drivers and bios are current and updated.

So.....ANY ideas? It started after COD went to 1.7. And now in any Steam game it just goes out.

Do you have some kind of system temperature gauge? (Processor, Board, HD...)

It only shuts down while gaming?

i would try to swap out power supplies. all the extra power your gpu pulls when gaming could be the culprit.

that will be my last resort to try.

I believe it to be a software issue and i have done some tinkering in that regard. Yesterday (saturday)...with a fair amount of gaming....NO shutdowns!

Power supply is the likley cause. You could try removing one of your graphics cards and see if you have the issue using less power.

I once had a MOBO that was hosed and would do that. Had to swap it out.

I would also say Power Supply honestly dude.

Sounds like it might be getting hot....or starting to fail, but not serious enough to be consistant.

I don't know of many software issues that will "Shutdown" the PC, only ones that restart them.

However, there may be a service in your "services.msc" list that is causing the PC to "shutdown" when it fails.

Not sure man...just plug in another power supply or play with the case open and see what happens.

I agree with my fellow members, it really looks like a power supply issue. Well if these shut-dows stopped, may be i would say not to touch to anything anymore

Well I'm glad it is fixed for now... Also, though I don't play COD4 much, I hope you got your lag\crashing issues fixed there...

I had a similar problen where my MOBO had a socket problem from all the moving I do, in which bumping the case, or even the fans could shake the CPU and then the PSU immediately cuts power...

I once had a problem where my PSU was the culprit to this exact problem, but after a few months it made itself pretty obvious, when the PSU actually arced inside of my case during a CAL match and fried 5 resistors and melted the casing on the 5W Power resistors and overcurrent prevention circuit... I suppose that's what you get from a PSU that comes with a case.... A chinese case at that
