From what I read they decided not to use it because weather testing. I guess the M4 was able to stand dust better.

I might be wrong on this, that test might have been the other way around. BUt there is some reason why it hasn't replaced the m4.

You are incorrect, it was reverse. The Xm8 was able to only have 127 stoppages out of 6000. The m4 had 882. I believe the main reason it hasn't been rolled out is we are in the middle of two conflicts, with others looming. The idea of rolling out a complete weapon redesign that doesn't use existing mags or mil-spec mounts during a wartime situation is unrealistic.
Especially seeing the M4 does a fantastic job. Not as good as the m14, but still good imo.

See I thought I had it wrong :P

I guess that whole switching weapons mid-war thing makes sense. After all if we we didn't learn our lesson from Vietnam we are stupid. When I say Vietnam I refer to the switching from the m14 to the m16.

Didn't the XM8 melt during troop trials? The gun is already hot in desert climates, so with little use it will probably get hot enough to melt, throwing it all out of alignment. Hell, probably resting the baby on top of your vehicle will melt it when it is a 120 out.

Early trials had issue with heat (talking 2002 or so) but that was fixed with reformulation. I wouldn't believe it with most gun makers but the xm8 is a H&K product. They had trials again in 2007 for the gun, so they are still considering it. I really think it is a wartime distribution and budget issue.

Do you happen to have the melting point off hand? I couldn't find it in any .pdf files floating around on the gun. H&K is usually pretty good, but I think that they wanted to get a good mp7 (which would be a great sidearm in the field) out before worrying too much about the xm8.
