Weird shit. As a life long Packer fan I will sound off on this a little.
First I am sad to see how this whole thing has ended, I liked it where he retired and just faded off into the sun set. It was nice. I love Brett Favre (not in that way Trainzz.) I have never been to the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony, but I thought when Brett goes in, I think I will make the trip down to see it. He is that special.
But I once heard an NFL general manager say that it is better to get rid of an older player one year too soon rather than one year too late. I agree with this 100%, its about the team, not your feelings for a once great player. Last year he had an incredible season, what are the chances of him repeating or coming close this year? If you look at his last four years, the numbers are not all that good.
The Packers think they have a good young QB in Aaron Rodgers. Aaron has been sitting for three years behind Brett, and has two years left on his contract. When Brett retired in March they told Aaron that he was their guy. I think if they went back to Brett now, Aaron would be gone as soon as his contract ended.
While I know he has done GREAT things for the Packers it was time for him to go. He has waffled to retire or not the last three years so this whole thing got old in a hurry. The Packers had gone in another direction so they had to do this. They begged him to stay retired but had to deal with it as best they could when he came back. I think the Packers organization dealt with the whole thing with class.
If Rodgers is a bust the Packers will have egg on their face, but if Brett had come back and threw 50 picks they would have looked bad too. They had to do what they thought gave them the best chance to win over the next 3-5 years, not just this next year.
It will be weird seeing him in a Jets uniform, but at least he is not a Viking or a Bear (the Bears suck). Brett in Tampa would not have been good either as we play them in Tampa this season. New York was the best spot. In the end I think not much will be rememberd about his time with the Jets (unless he takes them to the Super Bowl or deep in the playoffs), what he will be rememberd for is what he did as a Packer. Does anyone remember much about Jordan with the Wizards? Montana with the Cheifs? Namath with the Rams?
Packers President Mark Murphy
"Brett has had a long and storied career in Green Bay, and the Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished on the field and for the impact he made in the state. It is with some sadness that we make this announcement, but also with the desire for certainty that will allow us to move the team and organization forward in the most positive way possible.
"We respect Brett's decision that he could no longer remain here as a Packer. But there were certain things we were not willing to do because they were not in the best interest of the team. We were not going to release him nor trade him to a team within the division. When Brett ultimately decided that he still wanted to play football, but not in Green Bay, we told him that we would work to find the best solution for all parties involved. We wish Brett and his family well.
"We appreciate the tremendous passion shown by our fans. We, like them, always will see Brett Favre as a Green Bay Packer and our respect for him never will change. Moving forward, we are dedicated to delivering a successful 2008 season for all Packers fans."
